In part four we discussed the Sabbath Day and some historical markers. Now we want to look at preparation for keeping the Sabbath day properly. What should be done prior to this Holy day?
And he said unto them, This is that which Yahweh has spoken, Tomorrow is a solemn rest, a holy Sabbath unto Yahweh: bake that which you will bake, and boil that which you will boil; and all that remains over lay up for you to be kept until the morning. And they laid it up until the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not become foul, neither was there any worm in it. And Moses said, Eat that to-day; for today is a Sabbath unto Yahweh: today you shall not find it in the field. Six days you shall gather it; but on the seventh day is the Sabbath, in it there shall be none. And it came to pass on the seventh day, that there went out some of the people to gather, and they found none. And Yahweh said unto Moses, How long refuse you to keep my commandments and my laws? See, for that Yahweh has given you the Sabbath, therefore he gives you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide you every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day. So the people rested on the seventh day. Exodus 16:23-30.ASV
In this passage preparation is ordered prior to the Sabbath day observation. You must prepare everything on the sixth day for the seventh day observation. The seventh day is a day of complete rest.
Should we conduct any business on the Sabbath day? Read the following account in Nehemiah.
In those days saw I in Judah some
men treading wine-presses on the Sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading
asses therewith; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens,
which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day: and I testified against
them in the day wherein they sold victuals. There dwelt men of Tyre also
therein, who brought in fish, and all
manner of wares, and sold on the Sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in
Jerusalem. Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them,
What evil thing is this that you do, and
profane the Sabbath day? Did not your fathers thus, and did not our
Elohim bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet you bring more wrath
upon Israel by profaning the Sabbath.
And it came to pass that, when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before
the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors
should be shut, and commanded that they should not be opened till after the
Sabbath: and some of my servants set I over the gates, that there should
no burden be brought in on the Sabbath day. So the merchants and sellers of all
kind of wares lodged without Jerusalem once or twice. Then I testified against
them, and said unto them, Why lodge you about the wall? if you do so again, I
will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the Sabbath.
And I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves, and that they
should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day. Remember unto me, O
my Elohim, this also, and spare me according to the greatness of your
loving-kindness. Nehemiah 13:15-22
ASV
Here buying and selling were dealt with by Nehemiah. The Sabbath is set aside for the exclusive worship of Almighty Yahweh. Everything else must be put aside on the Sabbath day. Another passage that will instruct us in proper Sabbath observation can be found in Isaiah 58:13-14
If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your own pleasure on my holy day; and call the Sabbath a delight, and the holy of Yahweh honorable; and shall honor it, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words: then shall you delight yourself in Yahweh; and I will make you to ride upon the high places of the earth; and I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father: for the mouth of Yahweh has spoken it.
Once again we see prohibitions placed on the Sabbath day. 1. Not doing your own pleasure! 2. Not doing your own ways! 3. Not speaking your own words! 4. Honoring the Sabbath day above the rest of the weekdays! 5. Calling the Sabbath a delight!
The Sabbath was also taught by the Savior while he was here on earth. Matt.12:1-13 reveals the following.
At that season Yahshua went
on the Sabbath day through the grain fields; and his disciples were hungry and
began to pluck ears and to eat. But the Pharisees, when they saw it, said unto
him, Behold, your disciples do that which it is not lawful to do upon the
Sabbath. But he said unto them, Have you not read what David did, when he was
hungry, and they that were with him; how he entered into the house of Elohim,
and ate the showbread, which it was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them
that were with him, but only for the priests? Or have you not read in the law,
that on the Sabbath day the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are
guiltless? But I say unto you, that one greater than the temple is here. But if
you had known what this means, I desire mercy, and not sacrifice, you would not
have condemned the guiltless. For the Son of man is master of the Sabbath.
And he departed from there, and went into their synagogue: and behold, a man
having a withered hand. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the
Sabbath day? that they might accuse him. And he said unto them, What man shall
there be of you, that shall have one sheep, and if this fall into a pit on the
Sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? How much then is a man
of more value than a sheep! Wherefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath
day. Then said he to the man, Stretch forth your hand. And he stretched it
forth; and it was restored whole, as the other.
The following is from Yahweh's Torah law. Can we but obey this legislation?
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shall you labor, and do all
your work; but the seventh day is a Sabbath unto Yahweh your Elohim: in it
you shall not do any work, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your
man-servant, nor your maid-servant, nor your cattle, nor the stranger that is
within your gates: for in six days Yahweh made heaven and earth, the sea, and
all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: therefore Yahweh blessed the
Sabbath day, and hallowed it. Exodus 20:8-11
The Sabbath is an important sign between Almighty Yahweh and his chosen people! Do you want to be among the chosen few? Then start keeping the Sabbath Day properly according to scripture. The organization we are seeking will be keeping the Sabbath day correctly!
This will end part five. Next we want to look at the dietary laws according
to Torah! Yours
in Messiah, Hawke
